So, did Indiana do away with their registration tax? I recall paying over $100 around 2006 to register a newish Ford Taurus. My now wife’s newish

Unintentional cherry picking — the states excluded normally have a complex tax formula, so you just pay whatever is on the card they send out. Alabama would be about the same as CA. Some states hit us with ad valorem taxes hard, others just see registration as a minor annual clerical thing. Once your car “bottoms out” at $2,000 in value here, it’s just $32/year.
IIRC, my parents in MD (another supremely high tax state like CA) only paid $40 for a FOUR-YEAR tag. They get you everywhere else.

In VA you do pay $45.75 for the registration sticker and documentation. However, you can’t get the registration without paying your p roperty taxes which are figured at a percentage of the value of the car. This means that this year my Volvo was $310 for the property taxes and $45.75 for the registration for a total of $356.
So to me, it seems as though this list does not paint the whole picture. While the fees may be more in California, the disparity is likely not as great as it may seem at first blush.

Its more likely that if a state was missing, it is about the same cost which would make this look less dramatic. We are not the only state that charges a bunch of money. Idk why that car was so much in particular though. My cars are in the $150 range each or so versus I paid about $60 in NJ. Which is certainly more but I have seen worse in other states.

In Missouri it would cost you more than California . About $100 for plates and registration but then you get charged an annual personal property tax which is a percentage of valuation. W hen I last bought a new car I paid $800 in addition to the plates and I live in a rural county with lower taxes than the more populated areas. My car was also valued at $25k and not the $50k that Escalade is.

California’s registration also includes the annual taxes that aren’t part of the registration. When I moved to Virginia I was amazed at how low the registration was, then I got the bill twice a year for “personal property tax” and said “Oh, there’s the where the difference went to.”

That’s a bit deceptive, and isn’t necessarily reflective of the actual cost to own a vehicle. My registration might only be $60, but I have to pay a $500ish annual excise tax (calculated off of original msrp) on top of that. It looks like California just rolls that into one fee.

I think this would be the same cost in Montana as we don’t have sales tax so there is slightly higher fees to register vehicles in state . IIRC my new Outback was about $400 to register the first year. Now it’s 7 years old and we are down to about $140/year on that car.

Bad research is bad. Just because the registration itself is priced low doesn’t mean that the state won’t get you on other things outside of the registration cost. E.g., Pennsylvania’s annual registration costs $42 (not $36 like the derpy post you attached), but doesn’t include the compulsory (including for
brand-new cars)
annual safety inspection
(and emissions inspection in urban/suburban counties), nor the sales tax on purchase (6% in most places, higher in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh)
. Also, the Pennsylvania Turnpike is hella expensive nowadays.

That does not include the vehicle property tax though. In California it’s 0.65% but in Mississippi (one of those supposedly tax friendly states ) it’s 3.55%.
So on a 2016 Escalade worth probably around $40k that’s an additional $260 ($991 total) in California and an additional $1420 ($1435) total in Mississippi.

It might sort of balance out in the end. Here in TX, we don’t pay state income tax, but the state sales tax is 6.25%, and local agencies are allowed to tack up to an additional 2% on top of that. So we are paying 8. 25% sales tax. The VA sales tax is 4.3%, and locals can add up to 1%. That state sales tax rate is virtually unchanged since I lived there in the 80s, when it was 4%.

I Georgia you pay a tax when you buy a car, if you buy at a dealer it is rolled into the purchase price, if you buy Private Party the DMV decides how much it is worth and you pay that tax to register it the 1st time, if you move to the state you pay it to transfer your registration. My 2007 Dodge Ram was $500 to register last January but it will be $20 the rest of it’s life, this is better than the old Excise tax system which averaged about $150 a year per car.
It works if you keep you cars a long time.

The rain tax has a some what logical origin, they’re taxing the amount of “impermeable surfaces” on your property. Basically if you have a large parking lot on your property they’re going to hit you with higher taxes because of the likelihood that oil and various other pollutants will be washed off that surface along with rainwater along with messing up the grounds natural draining properties if drainage is accounted for.
I’m going through this shit right now because the PO of my house slapped a shit tonne of concrete everywhere without a permit and I’m trying to expand my house.

It’s how we fund schools , fire and police here. The state gives almost no f unding to any of the above entities so that’s how the local county taxes to fund it.
Taxes aren’t fun but are necessary if you want roads to drive on, schools to educate children and someone to show up when you call 911.

Washington State counties often have a similar tax, but it’s collected through the registration system. Prior to the late 90s there was a 2% tax on the current value of the vehicle, payable with your registration, similar to Virginia’s.

And there must be a cadre of folks in power in VA who felt there was no reason people should be doing 93 in a 55 and that the penalty for doing so will be severe. This isn’t a personal liberty thing, it is a safety thing. What others states ignore, as far as speeding is concerned, is hardly relevant. It’s not a “fe lo ny-grade” anything, it’s a misdemeanor. Calling it a “police state” because you can’t drive as fast as you deem safe, regardless of posted limits, is a bit hyperbolic.

It’d be like $4k in the ST3 tax region in Washington...

If a state is missing it's because it's even more expensive and thus doesn't prove their point (Colorado)

Texas has such a sweet tax regime. Our sales and property taxes are super high to make up for the lack of income tax.

California is way over priced, I’m going to move when the time is right. Too much taxes.

Injury isn’t required for reckless driving.

And I don’t live in VA.

Don’t distort what I said. That’s simply disingenuous.

My registration for a 2012 Camry SE with 175k would have been $146 in Mississippi this year. I’m not sure that the $15 is referring to.

I could never swing it, but this was something I hoped to do for a while. There’s just not enough work on the north side of the river...

Utah has even twistier mountain roads.

SoCal has torrential rains and flash floods when it rains. It rains hard when it does. If you’re ever in Los Angeles, it’ll probably be dry and you’ll marvel at these massive concrete-lined river beds, but we call them “washes” and they will be filled to the brim or even overflowing when these rain storms come. People often die from rain there.

I actually do know that. I was just taking the opportunity to make a smart-assed joke associated with the desert clime. However, it was pretty lame, so I’ll own that mistake.

Oh, they already had the idea. They were considering a progressively higher registration price depending on the value of the vehicle, like Indiana does. Fortunately they didn’t go for that.

Illinois’ has both a stat income tax, and plenty of sales tax. In my town, it’s somewhere between 7-8%. It’s over 10% in Crook ... I mean Cook ... county.

Illinois voters don’t tolerate corrupt politicians. They demand them.

That GA number is BS. Yes, “ registration ” is $20, but you also have to pay ad velorum tax at the same time. Our 2018 Odyssey is something like $300.

To be fair, though, gas prices here are still lower than in CA despite those taxes. It’s around
$2.58
/gal in most places near me, while in IM’s town they’re around $3.80/gal.

Yeah they were @10-15 minutes from the border, with full utilities. On top she was putting 35k a year on her car, just commuting. We were like, how much are you actually saving?
